La independencia de India y Pakistán en 1947 fue el comienzo de un conflicto que tuvo su momento álgido en 1971. El conflicto terrestre por el dominio del territorio se extendió rápidamente al océano Índico haciendo del submarino su principal actor. La pérdida de un submarino pakistaní y una fragata india, víctima del torpedo de un submarino, fueron las primeras pinceladas de una táctica que no se había empleado desde el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Este año hemos visto cómo se ha vuelto a recrudecer el conflicto por Cachemira, la India acaba de probar su primer submarino nuclear balístico de manufactura nacional y Pakistán ha firmado un suculento acuerdo con China por el puerto de Gwadar y ha encargado ocho modernos submarinos con capacidad de lanzar armas tácticas nucleares. Esto nos lleva a hacernos la siguiente pregunta: ¿puede suponer un riesgo esta carrera armamentista? El arsenal nuclear de ambas naciones favorece una disuasión inestable, disuasión que se puede ver afectada por el conflicto de Cachemira, la presencia del terrorismo y la llegada de un tercer actor: China.

The independence of India and Pakistan in 1947 was the beginning of a conflict that had its peak in 1971. The war over Kashmir’s territory spread rapidly in the Indian Ocean, turning the submarine its main actor. The loss of a Pakistan’s submarine and an India’s frigate, victim of a torpedo, were the first brushstrokes of a tactic that used since the end of World War II. This year, we have seen how a conflict has risen again in Kashmir, India has just tested its first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, and Pakistan, has signed an agreement with China about Port Gwadar and has bought eight submarines capable to launch nuclear tactical weapons. This brings us to the next question: Can be successful this arms race? The nuclear armament of both nations favors an unstable dissuasion, dissuasion that can be affected by the conflict of Kashmir, the presence of terrorism and the arrival of a third actor, China.
