La ruta del mar Caribe, históricamente un foco de atracción del comercio marítimo, tanto legal como ilegal, ha cobrado de nuevo importancia para el narcotráfico. Esta ruta fue la más utilizada por los grandes cárteles colombianos en los años 80, pero ante la presión de las autoridades colombianas y estadounidenses, los narcotraficantes cambiaron la vía marítima por la terrestre, a través del istmo centroamericano, y potenciaron la aérea, directamente a Honduras. El golpe a esta última ruta, en 2013, ha despertado de nuevo la vía caribeña, especialmente a raíz del drástico aumento de la producción de cocaína que ha experimentado Colombia, un excedente que hay que vender y que se ha servido de la crisis venezolana para su tránsito hacia el Caribe y los principales mercados, EE. UU. y Europa.

The route of the Caribbean Sea, historically a focus of attraction of maritime trade, both legal and illegal, has once again become important for drug trafficking. This route was the most used by the great Colombian cartels in the 80s, but under pressure from Colombian and US authorities, drug traffickers changed and start using the Central American isthmus route, and enhanced another one flying to Honduras. The blow to this last route, in 2013, has awakened the Caribbean one again, regarding the drastic increase in cocaine production that Colombia has experienced for the last years, a surplus that must be sold and that has served itself by the Venezuelan crisis to transit to the Caribbean Sea and the last main markets, the USA and Europe.
