La huella que la actividad minera desarrollada en la cuenca carbonífera de Peñarroya-Belmez-Espiel, desde su descubrimiento en 1788 hasta su finalización en 2010, ha dejado en el municipio cordobés de Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo es muy visible y patente en su historia, en sus costumbres y tradiciones, en sus señas de identidad, en su entramado urbano, en las actividades desarrolladas por instituciones públicas y asociaciones privadas y sobre todo en el sentir de los peñarriblenses. La ciudad se define a sí misma como Pueblo Minero, incorporando en su escudo pico y pala en aspa y el color negro del carbón en su bandera tricolor y adoptando como fiesta local el día de Santa Bárbara, patrona de la minería. Al margen de antiguas instalaciones industriales reconvertidas, edificios, esculturas y nombres de calles y plazas que salpican el entramado urbano, determinadas iniciativas, que han perdurado en el tiempo, mantienen vivo este espíritu minero: procesión de Santa Bárbara, concurso de entibadores mineros, concurso nacional cante de las minas ciudad de Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo y actuaciones en defensa de la conservación y divulgación del patrimonio minero, industrial y ferroviario.

The traces left behind by the mining industry in the coal mining area of Peñarroya-Belmez-Espiel (Cordoba), from 1788 until the mine closed in 2010, are clearly evident in its history, customs and traditions, in the hallmarks of its identity, in the urban layout, the activities organised by public institutions and private associations, and above all in local sentiment. The town still defines itself as a mining town, with its coat of arms and flag featuring a crossed pick and shovel on a coal-black background, and with the local fiesta held on the feast of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of mining.
Apart from reconverted industrial installations, the town’s mining history is reflected in buildings, sculptures and the names of streets and squares. Some initiatives which have stood the test of time keep the mining spirit alive: the Procession of Saint Barbara, the timbering contest, the Peñarroyo-Pueblonuevo national mining folk-song contest and other activities to promote conservation and wider knowledge of the mining, industrial and railway heritage.
