Thomas Shelton, vida y traducción: en torno a los motivos de la primera traducción inglesa del Quijote

    El presente artículo busca aclarar los posibles motivos por los que Thomas Shelton realizó la primera traducción del Quijote, una tarea que hasta ahora no han aclarado los estudios en torno a esta traducción del clásico español. Lo anterior se realiza a partir de una investigación basada en los principios de historia de la traducción de Anthony Pym. Siguiendo sus pautas metodológicas, el análisis no sólo se centra en el contexto histórico en el que aparece esta traducción, sino también en las redes de franciscanos irlandeses en Europa, en los autores que rodearon a Shelton en los Países Bajos españoles y en las dinámicas de las dedicatorias de obras originales y traducciones en los círculos cortesanos ingleses. Como resultado de lo anterior se señala que muy probablemente Shelton buscaba ganarse con su traducción del Quijote un lugar en la corte del rey Jacobo, factor determinante para emprender un estudio más profundo de este hito de la historia de la traducción.

    This article aims to account for the possible motives that led Thomas Shelton to do the first translation of Don Quixote, a task that none of the studies of this translation of the Spanish classic to date have explained. This is done through an investigation based on Anthony Pym's principles of the history of translation. Following his methodological guidelines, the analysis focuses not only on the historical context in which the translation appeared, but also on the Irish Franciscan networks in Europe, on the authors who surrounded Shelton in the Spanish Netherlands and on the dedication dynamics of original works and translations in English court circles. As a result of this analysis the article argues that Shelton's translation of the Quixote was very probably aimed at securing a place at King James's court, a determining factor in favour of a more in-depth study of this milestone in the history of translation.
