  A inicios del siglo XX, Costa Rica recogía los frutos de la Reforma Educativa emprendida por los liberales en 1886, gracias a la cual pudo incrementarse el número de lectores y, con ello, la cantidad de periódicos en todo el país. El objetivo del artículo es analizar las publicaciones periódicas que vieron la luz pública fuera de San José entre 1900 y 1950. Se plantean las siguientes preguntas: ¿Por qué aparecen y desaparecen las cabeceras provincianas? ¿Cuáles son las principales características de estos impresos? ¿Cómo es el proceso de producción de un periódico de provincia? ¿Cómo se distribuyen las publicaciones periódicas concebidas en la periferia?

  At the beginning of the 20th century, Costa Rica was enjoying the well-earned profits resulting from the educational reform that was implemented by the liberal party on 1886. Thanks to the reform, the level of analphabetism raised all over the country and consequently the sales of newspapers as well. The objective of this article is to analyze the newspaper publications issued outside the city of San Jose during the first half of the 20th century. On the same manner, the following questions are asked and answered: what was the cause of the appearance/disappearance of province capitals? What are the main characteristics of these newspapers? How are they produced? How are they distributed?
