    La representación del rey en el teatro de Lope de Vega ha suscitado múltiples interpretaciones. En este trabajo se analiza la dramatización de Alfonso III de Portugal, monarca medieval que repudió a su primera mujer para casarse con doña Beatriz de Castilla, hija de Alfonso X el Sabio, en La discreta venganza. Se concluye que Lope presenta al rey como un gobernante inexperto, con errores de juicio, en contraposición con la figura de don Juan, su valido, quien se opone al nuevo matrimonio, y de la reina consorte, cuyo linaje se exalta en la comedia.

    The representation of the king archetype in Lope de Vega’s plays has inspired innumerable different interpretations. This paper analyses the dramatization of Alfonso III of Portugal in La discreta venganza: a medieval monarch who repudiated his first wife to marry Beatrice of Castile, Alfonso X’s daughter. This article shows that Lope presents an inexpert king, with errors of judgment, in contrast to the figure of don Juan —his private— who objected to the new marriage; and also to the Queen Consort, whose lineage is exalted in this work.
