When considering the difficulties in reaching a post-2012 international climate agreement among nations of the world, and the need to engage in climate change mitigation and adaptation without delay, it is essential to interest communities and to support local governments to deal with local climate and energy action. ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) addresses these and many other issues that impact on sustainable development, working with municipalities and their partners in many different areas. Its entry point is exploring sustainability as a foundation for planning and action. This paper briefly introduces the organisation as a global association and the European network linked to it. It outlines the organisation’s activities to build local leadership and competences on many different topics, as well as its involvement in advocacy on behalf of local governments at international and European forums. Through its support offered to local governments and their partners, ICLEI helps to translate sustainability into practice.
