Estudio de la iconografía andrógina de Akhenatón como estrategia política y religiosa

    Bajo el reinado del faraón Akhenatón se produjo un cambio de estilo artístico en Egipto donde las representaciones físicas se hicieron más naturales y se empezaron a exagerar las formas del cuerpo femenino, especialmente en el caso del rey. Las dos teorías propuestas para explicar el significado de estas representaciones son, por un lado, que este estilo era puramente simbólico y, por otro, que reproducía la apariencia real de un hombre con serios desórdenes fisiológicos. En este artículo se aspira a rechazar la hipótesis de las enfermedades atribuidas al rey, ofreciendo argumentos alternativos que apoyan el simbolismo detrás de la iconografía andrógina del faraón Akhenatón. Se entiende este recurso como un último intento por recuperar el prestigio perdido de la monarquía y retornar al tiempo en el que los reyes-dioses realmente controlaban el país.

    A change in the Egyptian artistic style, with more natural physical representations that exaggerated the forms of the female body —especially in the case of the king— occurred by the reign of king Akhenaten. The two theories suggested to explain the meaning of these representations are, on the one hand, that this style was purely symbolic and, on the other, that it reproduced the actual appearance of a man affected by physiological disorders. In this article, we aim at rejecting the hypothesis of the diseases attributed to the king, offering alternative arguments that support the symbolic function behind of the androgynous iconography for pharaoh Akhenaten. Hence, this resource should be understood as the ultimate attempt by the crown to recover the lost prestige of the monarchy and return to the times when the god-kings really dominated the country.
