  Along with Dujardin and Joyce, Larbaud plays a major role in the history of the so-called “interior monologue…” In 1923 he published three novellas that had previously appeared separately. This paper shows how, from one story to the next, Larbaud elaborates a personal way of writing inner discourse, essentially based on the relationship between person, space and time. The first novella is more akin to the psychological novel of the second half of the nineteenth century (Cf. George Eliot) than to “interior monologue”. The second is to a certain extent comparable to Dujardin’s Lauriers. As for the third, under the influence of both Dujardin and Joyce, it is caracterised by a subtle and very personal use of the Wagnerian leitmotiv. Consequently, can we properly postulate the existence of a prototypical way of writing inner discourse ? Is it at all possible to express our stream of consiousnnes with our everyday words ? In fine, is it at all possible to formutate thought in words ?

  Entre Dujardin et Joyce, Larbaud joue un rôle majeur dans l’histoire du « monologue intérieur ». En 1923, il réunit trois nouvelles qui avaient été publiées séparément. Il est montré comment, de l’une à l’autre, il élabore une écriture personnelle du monologue intérieur fondée sur une analyse des rapports de la personne à l’espace et au temps. La première tient davantage du roman psychologique de la fin du XIXe siècle (cf. George Eliot) que de l’écriture de type « monologue intérieur ». La seconde est à certains égards comparable aux Lauriers sont coupés. Quant à la troisième, sous la double influence de Dujardin et de Joyce, elle se caractérise par une utilisation subtile et très personnelle du leitmotiv wagnérien. Dès lors la question se pose de savoir s’il existe une écriture prototypique du monologue intérieur, s’il est possible d’écrire « le langage intérieur » avec les mots du langage ordinaire, in fine, si la pensée n’est pas simplement indicible.
