Resumen de Obstetrix. Funzioni e ruolo sociale nel pensiero cristiano e nella tradizione giuridica

The paper analyses the figure of obstetrix in Christian thought and in the technical sources, from the texts attributed to the jurists of the Severan age to the constitutions gathered in the code of Justinian.
The negative consideration that the fathers of the Church show to have towards the obstetrices contrasts with the opinion of the jurists and of Justinian himself, who assimilate them to the medici in a process of gradual revaluation of their competences and their social role.

Il contributo analizza la figura dell’obstetrix nel pensiero cristiano e nelle fonti tecniche, dai testi attribuiti ai giuristi dell’età severiana alle costituzioni raccolte nel codice di Giustiniano.
La considerazione negativa che i padri della Chiesa mostrano di avere nei riguardi delle obstetrices si contrappone all’opinione dei giuristi e dello stesso Giustiniano, che le assimilano ai medici in un processo di graduale rivalutazione delle loro competenze e del loro ruolo sociale.
