El objetivo del trabajo es comparar como afecta el problema de las «maras» en España y en El Salvador, y se ha empleado exclusivamente información obtenida en fuentes abiertas.
En el caso de España si bien existe el fenómeno, sus características son diferentes tanto en el alcance como en el tipo de organizaciones presentes ya que, sin negar la presencia de las dos principales «maras» Salvatrucha MS13 y Barrio 18, especialmente de la primera, el alcance de sus actuaciones es diferente y ha sido en gran parte neutralizado por la acción de la Guardia Civil y la Policía Nacional, y de la Justicia.
Por otro lado, aunque existente, la inmigración centroamericana en España no es comparable a la presencia de sudamericanos, especialmente ecuatorianos, colombianos, bolivianos, pero también peruanos, dominicanos, paraguayos, o argentinos, con lo cual las bandas latinas dominantes son las de mayor implantación en estos países, y que si bien comparten ciertas características con las «maras» , también se producen diferencias apreciables.
Las bandas latinas, un subproducto de la emigración a partir del año 2000, están compuestas especialmente por hijos e incluso nietos de inmigrantes latinos, y si bien la presencia de españoles de origen no latino está demostrada, esta es minoritaria.
