Desde el último cuarto del siglo XX ha venido avanzando con creciente fuerza la tesis de que los fenómenos y procesos sociales, así como otros muchos ámbitos de la realidad, son complejos. Sin duda, los enfoques o teorías de la complejidad han planteado prometedores desafíos y ofrecen prometedoras oportunidades de aprendizaje a las ciencias sociales, no solo en la manera de concebir sus problemas, sino también en la manera de estudiarlos metodológica y empíricamente. Sin embargo, en este reto habría que tener presente que las ciencias sociales no son unívocas, como tampoco lo son los enfoques de la complejidad. Por el contrario, las ciencias sociales presentan una diversidad de tendencias teórico-epistemológicas y habría que considerar que algunas de ellas también presentan desafíos teóricos y cuestionamientos metodológicos a algunas de las vertientes de la complejidad. Sobre estos mutuos aprendizajes y desafíos es de lo que trata este escrito.

Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, the thesis that social phenomena and processes, as well as many other areas of reality, are complex has been advancing with increasing force. Undoubtedly, approaches or theories of complexity have posed promising challenges and offer promising learning opportunities to the social sciences, not only in the way of conceiving their problems but also in the way of studying them methodologically and empirically. However, in this challenge, it should be borne in mind that social sciences are not unique, nor are complexity approaches. On the contrary, the social sciences present a diversity of theoretical-epistemological tendencies and it should be considered that some of them also present theoretical challenges and methodological questions to some of the aspects of complexity. About these mutual learnings and challenges is what this writing is about.
