    Se cumplen cien años del nacimiento de James W. “Ike” Altgens, autor de las fotografías que conmocionaron al mundo horas después del asesinato a John F. Kennedy. Su aniversario nos sirve como pretexto para iniciar un recorrido que se remonta a los orígenes del fotoperiodismo e indagar, a través de la lectura de las páginas de prensa ilustrada, acerca de la naturaleza del acto fotográfico, su valor en tanto hecho único e irrepetible y prueba documental. Los sospechosos del asesinato a Lincoln, el culpable de la muerte del presidente Garfield en los Estados Unidos, Charles Guiteau, o el anarquista italiano Michele Angiolillo, autor confeso de la muerte de Cánovas del Castillo en España, son algunos de los protagonistas que desfilarán ante la cámara en el presente artículo. Estudiaremos sus reacciones y también el papel de los que, detrás del objetivo, no siempre tuvieron la ocasión de disparar.

    It is the 100th anniversary of the birth of James W. “Ike” Altgens, author of the photographs that shocked the world hours after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. This anniversary serves as a pretext to begin a journey that goes back to the origins of photojournalism. It also serves to in- vestigate, by reading the pages of the illustrated press, the nature of the photographic act, and its value as a unique and unrepeatable fact as well as a piece of documentary evidence. The suspects of the Lincoln’s murder; Charles Guiteau, guilty for killing the President Garfield in the United States; or the Italian anarchist Michele Angiolillo, confessed murderer of Cánovas del Castillo in Spain, are some of the protagonists whose photos are displayed in the article below. We will study their reactions and also the role of those who, behind the lens of their cameras, did not always have the chance to shoot.
