Francisco Linares Villalta, un sanroqueño en la batalla naval de Santiago de Cuba (1898)

    Francisco Linares Villalta fue un sanroqueño que tuvo una corta pero apasionante vida dedicada al mar y, sobre todo, a su país. De familia de larga ascendencia militar, ingresa en la Escuela Naval donde alcanza el grado de Alférez de Navío.

    Destinado a Filipinas, allí coincide con el levantamiento tagalo de 1896, lo que le obliga como marino a participar en varias acciones de guerra. Entrando el verano de 1897 vuelve enfermo a la Península con un permiso de cuatro meses. Acabado éste, se reincorpora al servicio como oficial del Infanta Mª Teresa. Estando de maniobras por el Mediterráneo tiene lugar el hundimiento del Maine en el puerto de La Habana. Entonces estalla la guerra hispano-estadounidense y su buque se dirige a Cuba, donde el 3 de julio de 1898 tiene lugar la batalla naval de Santiago de Cuba, en la que es destrozada la escuadra española y muere el joven sanroqueño

    Francisco Linares Villalta was a native of San Roque who had a short but thrilling life devoted to the sea and, above all, to his country. He was a descent of a military family, and he entered the Navy Academy, where he reached the grade of Alférez de Navío. He was stationed in Filipinas, where he was present at the Tagalog uprising of 1896, so he was obliged as a sailor to take part in several war actions. At the beginning of the summer of 1897, due to an illness, he came again to the peninsula with a permission of four months. When the permission ended, he reinstated to the military service as an official of Infanta Mª Teresa. Being in maneuvres in the Mediterranean Sea, the Maine was sunk in La Habana port. Then, the Spanish-American war started, and his ship made his way towards Cuba, where the 3rd of July, 1898 the naval battle of Santiago de Cuba took place. In that battle, the Spanish Army was devastated and the young Francisco Linares died.
