Reflexiones sobre el origen del topónimo “Algeciras

    Tradicionalmente se viene repitiendo de forma mecánica en la historiografía comarcal una explicación del topónimo Algeciras, como derivado del árabe al-Yazīra al-Haḍrā, que significa isla verde. Se ha considerado como origen la existencia de una isla poblada de vegetación, localizada en la pequeña Isla Verde, frontera a la actual Villa Vieja y hoy hecha desaparecer por los rellenos y ampliaciones del puerto. Pero una revisión metódica de fuentes e historiografía, sin discutir el origen árabe del topónimo, permite poner en duda el identificar la familiar Isla Verde del puerto algecireño como origen del topónimo, pues tuvo otros nombres a lo largo de la historia y el actual se establece en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. La actual Isla Verde no dio nombre a la ciudad, sino que, todo lo contrario, la ciudad “bautizó” a la pequeña isla, cuyo nombre actual parece fruto de una interpretación erudita de las fuentes, en época de la Ilustración…Se ofrecen en esta comunicación varias hipótesis alternativas de carácter novedoso, basándose una de ellas en trabajos arqueológicos y estudios paleogeográficos

    Traditionally, an explanation about the place name Algeciras has been repeating itself throughout the regional history, as a derivation from the arabic al-Yazira al-Hadra, which means green island, a term that comes from the existence of an island full of vegetation, the small island called Isla Verde, limit with the actual Villavieja and today disappeared because of the fillers and extensions of the port. But a methodical revision of sources and historiography, without arguing the arabic origin, let us question the familiar Isla Verde of the Algeciras port as the origin of the place name, considering that the island had other names throughout the history and the name it has nowadays was established in the second half of the 18th century. Isla Verde didn’t name the city, the opposite, the city named that little island, which name is apparently an expert interpretation of the sources in the Age of Enlightenment...In this text different and new hypothesis are offered, one of them based in archeological works and paleogeographic studies
