  El pintor Rafael Estanislao Argelés Escrich (Rafael Argelés) nació en Algeciras. Se formó en la madrileña Escuela de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado y en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Roma. Tras su primera exposición individual, entró en contacto con la Liga Africanista que lo comisionó para pintar temas marroquíes. En 1923 visitó Tetuán, la capital del Protectorado Español, realizando un fecundo trabajo que fue expuesto en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. No sería su última visita a Marruecos; durante los primeros meses de 1928 estuvo realizando nuevos temas y colaborando con África, Revista de Tropas Coloniales. Viajero impenitente, Argelés no fue ajeno a las corrientes africanistas del momento. Su visión de Marruecos fue la de un mundo costumbrista, sencillo, ancestral y vitalista, de primera mano.

  Painter Rafael Estanislao Argelés Escrich (Rafael Argelés) was born in Algeciras. He studied in Madrid at Escuela de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado (Painting, Sculpture and Engraving School), as well as at la Academia de Bellas Artes (Arts School) in Rome. After his first individual exposition, he first took notice and contacted with the Africanist League, which committed him to paint about Moroccan themes and motives. In 1923 he visited Tetouán, the capital city of the Spanish Protectorate, where he developed a great work which was shown in El Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (Madrid’s Arts Circle). That wouldn’t be his last visit to Morocco. He would also release new themes and he would collaborate with the magazine África, Revista de Tropas Coloniales during the first months in 1928. A tireless traveler, Argelés wasn’t alien to the Africanist influences of the period. His vision of Morocco brought alive a world of local customs, which was simple and vital. Moreover he gave his vision from his personal experience.
