    El reinado de Carlos II (1665-1700) coincidió con el momento de esplendor del barroco efímero hispano en todos los territorios del imperio: en la Corte, en la Península, en Europa y en América. En el universo festivo –caracterizado por fabricar efectistas espectáculos urbanos basados en la apariencia y el ilusionismo–, la plenitud artística y literaria del Siglo de Oro se puso al servicio de un espejismo: mostrar a los súbditos de ambos lados del Atlántico la imagen de un monarca fuerte y un imperio sin fin. El arte efímero, construido con materiales pobres pero que fingían ser lo más nobles, y los recursos obtenidos de las minas en los virreinatos americanos, permitieron durante las últimas décadas del siglo XVII desplegar en su plenitud las posibilidades del artificio festivo. Numerosos libros de fiesta editados estos años en imprentas españolas, italianas, flamencas, novohispanas y peruanas han dejado buenos testimonios literarios y visuales de ello.

    The reign of Charles II (1665-1700) coincided with the splendor of the Hispanic ephemeral baroque in all the territories of the empire: in the Court, in the Iberian Peninsula, in Europe and in America. In that festive universe–characterized by urban shows based in feign and illusionism–, the artistic and literary apogee of the «Siglo de Oro» served a mirage: to show the subjects of both sides of the Atlantic the image of a strong monarch and an empire without end. The ephemeral art, built with poor materials pretending to be the most noble, and the resources obtained from the American mines, allowed during the last decades of the 17th century to entirely deploy the possibilities of that artifice. Great numbers of festival books were published those years in Spanish, Italian, Flemish, Novohispano and Peruvian printing houses, giving us magnificent literary and visual testimonies of the Baroque celebrations.
