In 1987 we developed and implemented a modern multi-tasking and multi-user operating system for computers based on Intel´s 386 CPU. This paper summarizes the benefits of the processor´s architecture as well as the problems and deficiencies we found out during implementation.
The general benefits result from orthogonal conceprs and performance. But in a few cases different concepts are not properly integrated, and precisely this leads to architectural problems.
