La palabra náhuatl xihuitl ofrece un caso ejemplar de polisemia lexical. Tiene cuatro significados: “hierba”, “año”, “turquesa” y “cometa”, y un número mayor si consideramos su forma xiuh- utilizada en composición con otras palabras. Además, en la práctica ritual y en los manuscritos pictográficos de la época de la conquista, el xihuitl se representaba de varias maneras (piedra, plumas, colores, glifo, etcétera). En este artículo, la autora se pregunta de qué manera los hablantes de náhuatl y actores rituales utilizaban los diferentes significados de la palabra.

The Nahuatl word xihuitl offers a case study of lexical polysemy. It has four meanings, “grass”, “year”, “turquoise” and “comet”, and a greater number if we consider its form xiuh- used in composition with other words. In addition, in the ritual practice and the pictographic manuscripts at the time of the conquest, xihuitl was represented in various ways (stone, feathers, colors, glyph...). The article asks how the Nahuatl speakers and ritual actors used the different meanings of the word.
