Una aproximación al área fuente del Weald de Cameros: datos geoquímicos

    • The Cameros Basin, in the NW of the Iberian Range (NE of the Iberian Peninsula), contains more than 7.000 m of clastic sediments in facies Weald. Although no direct evidence of lithological composition exists, the source area is supposed to be located at the SW part of the basin. A geochemical characterization has been carried out, on the basis of major and trace element ratios, in order to discriminate the nature, tectonic setting and the kind of processes underwent by the source rock.

      Major elements ratios, when compared with standard materials from different tectonic settings, show a close similarity to passive continental margins. Calculated chemical alteration indices indicate no intense chemical weathering of the source area and no significant variations along the stratigraphic section. Tectonism can be one of the main factors that controls different weathering ratios of the Weald basins of the Iberian Range. Trace element ratios also indicate that the material source should be acid igneous rocks or any rock derived from them, located on stable areas; most probably, the source area did not suffer important changes during the basin filling process.
