Written between 1803 and 1805, but not published until 1893 by W.E. Retana, «Estadismo delas Islas Filipinas, o viajes por este pais», by the Augustinian friar Joaquin Martinez de Zuniga,is a travel chronicle of great importance to know the general state of the Archipelago at the endof the XVIII century and early XIX century. Father Zuniga accompanied general Ignacio MariaAlava in two trips (in 1799 and 1802) through several provinces. The book deals with manytopics, from history to etnography. Remarks on geological and mining topics made by the authorare reviewed in this paper. Observations and opinions by Martinez de Zuniga about volcanicphenomena, thermal waters, metallic ores and quarries are pointed out. Particularly interestingis his hypothesis on the formation of Taal volcano and volcanism in general, that are inopposition to the widespread ideas of the French naturalist Buffon.
