Resumen de La figura de Lucas Mallada y Pueyo (1841-1921) y el Regeneracionismo en España: un análisis historicista

E. Casanova Cabezas, Guillermo Meléndez Hevia

  • The person of Lucas Mallada y Pueyo (1841-1921) deserves a special attention as an outstanding representative of Spanish geology and palaentology of the late XIXth century. A historical approach on the man and the scientist; based on the epistemological historicism, has been carried out in order to focus on social and historical factors rather technical and scientific aspects o f his work. The historical approach shows, first o f all, a geologist engineer socially and politically committed with the ideological trend o f the so-called Regenerationism in Spain. Such ideological frame quite often surfaces in his scientific work. Secondly, this approach also reveals an author deeply engaged with the scientific thinking of the century. A clear evidence of this would be his acception of the inductivist thinking and methodology, a widespread trend in the scientific communnity of the century. As a whole, Mallada as a social regenerationist, appears to match Mallada as a scientist. However, his scientific methodology, also analysed in this study, seems to be clearly set apart from, and not influenced by, individual prejudices or personal criteria.
