Resumen de Ingenieros militares en el río Atrato: cartografía y comercio (1760-1790)

La administración del Nuevo Reino de Granada buscó hacer del Chocó un área eficiente en la producción de minerales preciosos y un centro de intercambio comercial. Los argumentos para lograr tal fin se centraron en el comercio a través del río Atrato. El presente artículo analiza la manera como los ingenieros militares, mediante la cartografía, justificaron la liberación de la navegación comercial del río Atrato en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. A este efecto se tendrá en cuenta, principalmente, el plano del curso del río Atrato con la relación análoga que hizo el ingeniero militar Juan Donoso en su contexto de producción.

The administration of the Nuevo Reino de Granada sought to make the Chocó an efficient area in the production of precious minerals and a center of commercial exchange; the method to achieve this purpose was focused on trade via the Atrato River. This paper analyzes the way in which the military engineers, through cartography, justified the development of commercial navigation of the Atrato River in the second half of the 18th century. For this purpose, the map of the Atrato River’s course will be taken in consideration with the relationship made by the military engineer Juan Donoso in its production context.
