Las motivaciones por las cuales se canonizó a Pietro del Morrone son solo en parte, y a lo mejor en mínima parte, inherentes a su santidad, inherentes al "culto de la verdadera santidad, o sea la gloria de Dios y la edificación de la Iglesia" (San Pablo VI): se jugaba en aquel tiempo con la contraposición de un Papa contra el otro, para desarticular y subordinar el papado. El autor muestra que, más allá de los intereses políticos de la monarquía francesa en el mortal conflicto con Bonifacio VIII, conjugados con la versión inagotable de los Colonna, la causa de canonización alcanzó su propio fin. De hecho, se elevaba al honor de los altares un "pobre cristiano" que fue seguramente un hombre santo, un auténtico vir Dei, heredero y expresión de las corrientes profundas de la milenaria religiosidad italiana. Para muchos se asiste a una paradoja de la historia, para otros a uno de los múltiples e imprevistos juegos de la Providencia.

The motives for the canonization of Pietro del Morone reside only partly in his holiness of life, in that "veneration of true holiness, for the glory of God and for the building up of the Church" (St. Paul VI). Ar the time, it was a matter of thwarting any design setting up a rivalry between two Popes, in an attempt to subdue and dismantle the Papacy itself. The Author shows, too, how the canonization did achieve its proper purpose, fat beyond the political interest of the French monarchy fiercely opposed to Bobiface VIII, and the unending grudges of the House of Colonna. Inde-ed, there he was, a "poor Christian"raised to the honours of the altars; undoubtedly a holy man, a true vir Dei, heir and witness of the most ancient and profound way of living religiously.For most people, this is a paradox of history, while others see in it God's Providence at work.
