The study focused on the analysis of surface heat islands in the Metropolitan Area of Asunción (MAA) using remote sensing techniques. The main objectives of the research were: (1) to determine and evaluate the surface coverage classification of the MAA and (2) to estimate the surface temperature of the MAA. The methodology used was based on the calculation of the NDVI Spectral Index, unsupervised classification, evaluation of classification using the Kappa Index and the estimation of the surface temperature using LANDSAT 8 OLI - TIRS satellite images corresponding to two dates in 2013 and 2016 respectively. At the date studied (2013) the maximum and minimum temperatures were 47.17ºC and 26.66ºC respectively, in the second case (2016) the maximum reached 45.22ºC and the minimum was 19.24ºC. The sites with the lowest temperature correspond to the “vegetation” class and the sites with the highest temperature correspond to the “urban area” class, this shows the temperature difference between both classes and the presence of urban heat islands. When comparing these results with the records of the meteorological stations, an approximation to the values obtained in the study was found.
