La categoría de la alteridad es un producto social en el que el que intervienenmuchos factores en su construcción. Uno de estos factores refiere a las relacionesde poder y autoridad que ejercen algunos grupos sociales para definir y categori-zar a otros grupos de forma estereotipada. Estas categorías sociales de la otredadelaboradas a través de representaciones, discursos y prácticas pueden tener seriasconsecuencias en la vida cotidiana de los categorizados. Ejemplo de ello lo encon-tramos en la categoría social «tigani / gitano» usada para clasificar a los miembrosde la comunidad romaní y para asignarles una serie de atributos elaborados porel grupo categorizante. En el presente artículo se describe y analiza la cons -trucción de la categoría «tigani / gitano» a través de la historia de Rumanía y lasconsecuencias que esto implica.

The category of otherness is a social product in which many factors are invol-ved in its construction. One of these factors refers to the relations of power andauthority exercised by certain social groups in order to define and categorize othergroups in a stereotypical way. These social categories of the other elaboratedthrough representations, speeches and practices can have serious consequencesin the daily life of the categorized ones. An example of this is found in the socialcategory «tigani / gypsy» used to classify the members of the Roma community and to assign them a series of attributes elaborated by the categorizing group. Thisarticle describes and analyzes the construction of the «tigani / gypsy» categorythroughout the history of Romania and the consequences this implies.
