This article explains the situation of the Akkadian Empire from Šar-kali-šarri onwards, with the Akkadian rulers succeded and perphaps even overlapped by the “barbarian” Gutians from the Zagros mountains, who were able to rule the Mesopotamian plane in an ephemeral and shallow manner. In this situation, between the final moments of the Akkadian empire and the Gutean government, when arises Lagaš II, which marks the beginning of the Sumerian renaissance with Ur-baba and, especially, with Gudea.
