It has been said frequently that Max Weber, like many other sociologists, developed great part of his work in dialogue with Karl Marx. This dialogue, explicit some times and implicit others, leads Weber to the construction of a theoretical system qualitatively different and even opposed to the one of the founder of historical materialism. Starting off this idea, this article examines some of the fundamental characteristics of this intellectual debate and identifi es the philosophical, methodological and theoretical-sociological axes around which it is constructed (objec-tivity, role of the individual, concept of State, conception of capitalism and socialism, etc.).
