  • Resumen
    • The article addresses the history of the "Allegory of Patience" painted by Giorgio Vasari between 1551 and 1552 for the Florentine palazzo of Bernardetto Minerbetti, Bishop of Arezzo. Scholars had believed the original work could be identified as the canvas in the Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti, Florence), formerly in the collection of Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici and recorded in an inventory of 1675 as by Parmigianino. The dissimilarity between the style of picture and that of Vasary subsequently led to an attribution to Gaspar Becerra, a Spanish collaborator of his in Rome. The discovery of Vasari's original autograph painting, published here for the first time, makes it possible to rewrite the work's entire history, both in Florence and Ferrara, where Ercole II d'Este requested copies of Vasari's composition. Comparison with the autograph work also allows for an attribution of the canvas in Palazzo Pitti to Camillo and Sebastiano Filippi, and suggests it had Ferrarese origins. In conclusion, analysing the iconography and style of the newly-discovered painting, the author discusses the extent of Michelangelo's contribution to its "invenzione", as described in Vasari's correspondence.
