The Eastern South Pyrenean Eocene Foreland Basin, located in the eastern margin of the Ebro Basin, is formed by a tectonically active border in the N (that corresponds to the Pyrenees) and a passive wedge in the S (that corresponds to the Catalan Coastal Ranges). During the Lower Eocene, a continental sedimentation of alluvial fans (braid-delta type) took place in the passive margin close to the source area (probably the Montseny Massif). These deposits, up to 500 m inthickness, are made up of detrital sediments (mainly conglomerates and coarse-grained sandstones)and are arranged in alluvial red-bed sequences. These sediments were divided in three litostratigraphic units: Mediona Fm., Vilanova de Sau Fm. and Romagats Fm. Into a petrographical point of view, the sandstones are litharenites formed by plutonic and metamorphic rock fragments, quartz and feldspars.
