The study of geological low permeability formations has experienced, in the last years, an important development, due to the utility of this kind of materials as natural geological barrierthat surrounds the storage or spill area of different types of waste products. The physical characteristics of the low permeability rocks don't allow, in most cases, the application of the usual techniques of hydraulic characterization used traditionally in the permeable means, being necessary the development of a specific instrumentation for these formations. With the aim of knowing better the hydrogeologie of the low permeability formations, the Instituto Tecnológico GeoMinero de España (I.T.G.E.) has carried out the design and constructio nof the Hydrogeological Characterization Mobile Unit (U.M.H.).The instrumentation developed in the U.M.H. allows to carry out injection tests (constant rate orconstant head) and slug and pulse tests. The lower limit for the injection tests is N x KT12 m/s. Below this value, the pulse test has its apllication; remaining an overlaps area between boths, where the slug test is applied.
