“Un temerario desafío”: La difusión del surf durante el franquismo

  El surf es una actividad espectacular para los medios y al mismo tiempo encarna un espíritu de re-beldía. En España las primeras prácticas de surf se produjeron en los años 60, durante el régimen franquista. ¿Fue el surf una amenaza para éste? Este artículo examina la imagen del surf a través de las principales vías de difusión del deporte de las instituciones franquistas. Una de las principales conclusiones es que el surf fue permitido, pero no abiertamente apoyado. En general, no se dio in-formación sobre la existencia del surf en España, y así, se proyectó como una actividad lejana, exó-tica y extranjera, eminentemente masculina.

  Surfing is a quite attractive activity for the mass-media. It also represents an alternative spirit of rebelliousness. The first surfing activity in Spain was in the 1960s, at the time of the non-democratic regime of Franco. Was surfing a threat to the regime at this time? This article examines the image of surfing, through the main channels of promotion of sports within the institutions of the regime. One of the main conclusions is that surfing, although not prohibited, was not openly supported. In general, provision of information about the existence of surfing in Spain was very limited. In this sense, surfing was portrayed as a distant, exotic and foreign activity, eminently masculine.
