This article aims to establish a geographic analysis of the police forces present in the city of Rio de Janeiro. We believe that due to the capital condition enjoyed by this city for over 200 years, several political events in its territory and the history of some of its institutions were decisive for other brazilian cities. This is the case of the police forces present in this city, taken as object of analysis in this short article. We understand that by focusing this study on the police forces operating in Rio de Janeiro, we will be constructing an explanation of the origins of police violence throughout the national territory and revealing central aspects of the dynamics of territorial planning implemented in Brazilian cities.
