According to Article 85 of the new General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 the Member States must implement in their national legislations’ exemptions regarding the processing of personal data for journalistic purposes. The article analyses the recently adopted legislation in Bulgaria aimed to set the balance between the right to privacy and the right to freedom of expression and information at national level. On the basis of the notifications provided to the European Commission the article aims to analyse and compare the measures adopted in France, UK, Ireland, Luxemburg, Cyprus and Bulgaria in order to draw conclusions regarding to common trends and differences. The analysis is made in the context of the guidelines provided by the Article 29 Working Party in the frames of the previous Directive 95/46/EC as well as the established practice of the Bulgarian Personal Data Protection authority.
