    El artículo destaca la importancia que tuvieron las llamadas venerabiles domus o establecimientos cristianos de beneficencia (hospitales, hospederías, orfelinatos, asilos de ancianos […]) que surgieron en el Imperio Romano cristiano y en época bizantina. Dicha importancia se dio tanto desde un punto de vista histórico, porque es la primera vez en la historia que aparece una red de establecimientos, protegidos por el Poder Político, dedicados a proporcionar de modo gratuito ayuda y bienestar a los más pobres de la sociedad, como también, desde el punto de vista jurídico, porque algunos de ellos se configuraron como personas jurídicas fundaciones, gestionadas por administradores sujetos a responsabilidad. Dichos establecimientos fueron encuadrados por la pandectística del siglo XIX como fundaciones frente a las asociaciones o corporaciones.

    The article highlights the importance of the so-called venerabiles domus, that is, the Christian charitable establishments (hospitals, hostels, orphanages, nursing homes […]) that emerged in the Christian Roman Empire and the Byzantine era. This importance was given both, from a historical point of view because it is the first time in history that a network of establishments appears, protected by the Political Power, dedicated to providing free help and welfare to the poorest of society, as also, from the legal point of view, because some of them were configured as legal entities foundations, managed by administrators subject to responsibility. These establishments were framed by pandectística in the nineteenth century as foundations in front of associations or corporations.
