  • Mallarmé related to Lilith, his last cat, and the poet, according to the correspondence, participation in a collective work, and occasional pieces, with a distanced intimacy. Mallarmé's attitude is much the same as towards the dancer in his pieces on ballet: related to contemporary attitudes but actually concerned with the legibility of the animal or dancer for the poet — legibility because read, like a sign, not perceived as immediate meaning.
