Genet's complex play depends on a double scene — that where whites are judging a black man for the rape and murder of a white woman, and that, invisible, where blacks are judging a black for betrayal — where all actors are actually black and the audience is white; if desire, hate and artifice enact themselves in the relationship between black and white thus set up, nonetheless it is articulated to the possibility of love through the characters of criminal, victim, and traitor.
