Saint-Simon recounts the discomfiture of the royal bastards on the 26th of August 1718, a discomfiture carefully desired and orchestrated by him - from behind the scenes and behind a mask. The account of this episode seems the crucible for Saint-Simon's literary vocation, the crux and meaning of that enterprise in its capacity to redeem the "little duke" and both avenge him of and equate him with the despotic monarch himself.
