Resumen de “Check it out” – The construction ofpatient empowerment in health promotion leaflets

Inger Askehave, Karen Korning Zethsen

  • Patient empowerment – which involves new visions of patient roles and attempts to‘empower’ the general population to take charge of their health – is an influentialidea within the western health care system. Patient empowerment, however, is produced and made ‘real’ through language and so to fully understand what patientempowerment is, we need to explore the discourses and discursive practices that giveit meaning. Patient empowerment is likely to be ‘made real’ in health promotionmaterial and the aim of this article is to investigate the discursive construction of patient empowerment in health promotion leaflets.
