Colin Dyer

  • his is the first English translation of the day-by-day accounts of French explorers Hyacinthe de Bougainville and Auguste Vaillant who rounded Cape Horn in 1826 and 1836 respectively, but in different directions and seasons. Bougainville took what is usually considered to be the easier route and season, sailing from Valparaiso to Rio in summer. Vaillant sailed against the elements from Rio to Valparaiso in winter. Both explorers present details of their experiences and indicate the time they took to complete their journey.
