The failure of the Aznalcóllar mine's inpoundment, holding several million tons of pyrite, flotation tailings and acid water produced a flood along the Agrio river: a tributary of the Cuadiamar which drains Doñana National Park. The fine-grained sulfide deposit covered riverbanks and adjacent farmlands, extending to the upper Entremuros area, 40 km downstream from the mine. Removal of the pyritic sludge has been carried out by mechanical methods.
Several airborne Daedal us-1268 surveys were performed over the affected area. Geometric and radiometric corrections were applied. Chemical, mineralogical and spectral reflectance analysis on sludge and efflorescence samples have permitted to interpret multispectral data. Digital classification maps have allowed to monitor the progression of the pyritic sludge removal as well as the precise location of the highly soluble efflorescence salts.
