The geographical variability of the low-field magnetic susceptibility of superficial estuarine-like sediments from the Rias of Vigo and Pontevedra show a negative correlation with their content in pollutant heavy metals. The high statistical significance of this relationship and its origin has been established by means of bivariant correlations and principal component analysis of the susceptibility of the main grain-size fractions, their textural properties and their content in 13 relevant elements.
