Resumen de Arrangiarsi con arte. Note su Ferdinando Sanfelice: maestri e libri

Daniela Del Pesco

  • The essay suggests a comparison between the stairs belonging to the Neapolitan palaces and palaceshaped houses, which were constructed during the first half of the eighteenth century, and the technical and cultural formation of one of the most important manufacturers of this kind of architectural elements, Ferdinando Sanfelice. The purpose is to specify how much the architectural process owes to a formation that combines humanistic-literary disciplines with scientific-expermiental knowledge, within a context full of experience, which was ready to host a new European cultural trend, supported by the Austrian viceroy and, at a later time, by the Bourbon sovereigns. Between the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries the Neapolitan court was attended by the greatest masters of the ephemeral and perspective. Schor, Bibiena, Fisher von Erlach introduced the most advanced perspectival and scenographical-technical researches of the time in the Neapolitan context. The examination regards these contributions to the elaboration of the scenographical perforated stairs and monumental staircases, which invade the Neapolitan urban environment, as well as the contribution of disciplines such as mechanics, optics, geometry and mathematical sciences, made more approachable by a wide international production of essays and illustrated handbooks which, such as the ancient jotters of the building sites, suggested models and technical instructions.
