Resumen de La "Madonna del Cielo" di Santa Maria in Piazza a Fondi e altre aggiunte al catalogo di Aniello Stellato, "celebre intagliatore"

Stefano De Mieri

  • The article is focused on Aniello Stellato, one of the greatest wood cavers of the Neapolitan early seventeenth century. Of this artist, whose activity has recently been reconstructed in its essential lines by Pierluigi Leone de Castris, some significant works, mostly attested by documentary sources, are made known. These new pieces help to better understand the culture of Stellato and finally confirm in his catalogue works already ascribed to him through indirect documentary clues or on the basis of stylistic evaluations only. The most important of these new works is the 'Madonna del Cielo' in the church of Santa Maria in Piazza in Fondi, to which an unpublished document of 1611 refers. The analysis of this work aims to recognize the sculptor's reference models in the complex Neapolitan environment. The identification of the "Saint James the Apostle" commissioned by the important composer and organist Giovanni Maria Sabino (1640) in the collegiate church of Turi and the notable "Crucifix" of the church of the Holy Apostles of Naples (1648) allows to identify some features of the most advanced production of the sculptor.
