Resumen de Un ciclo ad affresco dell'Alto Casertano.: Le "Storie di sant'Antonio abate" di Teano

Italia Caradonna

  • The recently-found frescoes portraying the "Storie di Sant'Antonio abate", painted on the apsis of the homonymous church in Teano, enrich the critical debate on the early fifteenth-century Campania painting. The frescoes can be compared to the "Storie di Sant'Antonio abate" in Raviscanina, so much so that we can certify the presence of the same artists in both the buildings sites. The stylistic analysis used to campare this latter series to the other paintings of the chapel of Raviscanina -the "Storie della Vergine" and the "Albero di Jesse"- clearly remarks the intervention, in these latter, of a second team, within which the formation of Perinetto da Benevento probably took place. These considerations about the frescoes of Teano are the starting point to analyse the artistic activity of Perinetto, offering -once again- an evidence of the cultural liveliness of Terra di Lavoro, which is capable to revise the late-fourteenth-century tradition through the international-Gothic impulses coming from the capital.
