In this chapter we will discuss the fundamental properties of metal–oxide–semiconductor junctions and heterojunctions, together with a series of advanced nanostructures formed by one or several heterojunctions: modulation-doped quantum wells, multiple quantum wells, and superlattices. All of these constitute the building blocks of advanced micro- and optoelectronic devices. Their unique properties are very appealing for the development of several advanced semiconductor devices, including resonant tunneling diodes, optical modulators, cascade lasers, tunable light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors, which will be reviewed in Chapters 9 and 10.
