  • Resumen
    • Quantum confinement effects in one, two, or three dimensions in solids lead to increased electronic bandgaps. Accordingly, the optical behavior of low-dimensional systems, also affected by the nature of the excitons, is completely different from that of the bulk material. This is especially true in the case of quantum dots because of confinement in all three dimensions. This chapter presents the key optical properties of systems of reduced dimensionality. Additionally, the changes induced in the optical behavior of quantum wells and superlattices by the application of electric fields will be discussed, leading to Stark ladders and Bloch oscillations.
