Resumen de Applications II: Photonic and Optoelectronic Devices Based on Nanostructures

Raúl José Martín Palma, José Manuel Martínez Duart

  • In this chapter, we will analyze the principles of operation of several photonic and optoelectronic devices that take advantage of quantum size effects to improve their performance over their traditional counterparts. In particular, photonic crystals, which constitute a promising platform for the development of a new class of integrated photonic devices and components, will be discussed first. However, most of the chapter will be devoted to advanced laser devices, including those which base their operation on heterostructures, quantum wells, wires, and dots. Quantum well photodetectors and modulators, now standard devices for long-wavelength light detection and high-speed modulation of optical signals, will also be analyzed.
