    Este ensayo trata de contestar la pregunta ¿continúa teniendo validez el concepto de frontera para estudiar la historia de los Llanos en el siglo XXI? Para ello, en primer lugar, se analiza la evolución de la historiografía de la frontera en Estados Unidos; en segundo lugar, se examina la influencia que ha tenido en América Latina; en tercer lugar, se revisan los enfoques de frontera respecto a la historia de los Llanos de Colombia, y, por último, se propone un aspecto complementario al análisis de la frontera: el estudio de la Orinoquia como lugar o región única en el contexto de la nación colombiana.

    This essay seeks to answer the question: Is the concept of the frontier still viable in examining the history of the Llanos in the twenty first century?, by reviewing first, the evolution of frontier historiography in the United States; second, its influence in Latin America; third, frontier approaches to the history of the Colombian Llanos, and finally, by proposing an addition to frontier analysis—the study of Orinoquia as a distinctive place or region within the Colombian nation.
