    En este trabajo se revisa el vínculo entre la historia social y la de la Iglesia y la religiosidad, tomando de ejemplo a Nueva España. Más que un análisis exhaustivo, está centrado en las tendencias dominantes de las últimas dos décadas del siglo XX y primera del presente. La historia social sobre Nueva España se ha inspirado, en buena medida, en la historiografía francesa, inglesa o norteamericana. La investigación en México sobre la Iglesia se profesionalizó hasta ya entrado el siglo XX. En la última década se han escrito ensayos innovadores que, partiendo de las instituciones eclesiásticas, se han acercado más a cuestiones sociales y de la mentalidad religiosa. Así, la historiografía sobre la Iglesia y la religiosidad ha avanzado notablemente en dos aspectos: en el análisis sociopolítico de las instituciones eclesiásticas y sus miembros y en el estudio de la cultura religiosa y de la religiosidad popular.

    This work examines the relationship between social history and the history of the Church and religiosity taking New Spain as an example. More than an exhaustive analysis, we have focused on the dominant trends during the last two decades of the 20th century and during the first one of this century. The Social History of New Spain has largely been influenced by French, English or American historiography. Research on the Church in Mexico was not professionalized until the beginning of the 20th century. During the last decade, innovative studies have been written, which, starting from ecclesiastical institutions, have focused more on social issues and religious mentality. Thus, historiography on the Church and religiosity has significantly advanced in two aspects: in the social and political analysis of ecclesiastical institutions and their members, and in the study of religious culture and popular religiosity.
